The archaeological site of Su Nuraxi (the Nuraghe) is located in the municipality of Barumini. Declared in 1997 by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, Su Nuraxi stands at the foot of the famous Giara plateau that is known for the little horses that graze free and wild (the only place in Europe) in its territory.
The area was discovered in the ’50s by the archaeologist Giovanni Lilliu and it includes a village with ancient little streets and numerous stone huts, in the center of which stands one of the largest megalithic monuments in Europe: Su Nuraxi (the nuraghe). It is extraordinary example of the defensive system of the Nuraghic period of the Bronze Age.
Stories, legends and ancient mysteries echo in this fascinating place, symbol of power and home to magical rituals. An unforgettable tour to discover the most important archaeological site in Sardinia and the legendary Nuragic Civilization. A journey through time in one of the oldest places in the world, inhabited since prehistoric times, which will help you understand the origins of our ancient culture.

Su Nuraxi is not the only nuraghe in the area. Not far away there is another archaeological area known as Su Nuraxi ‘e Cresia (literally “the nuraghe of the church”), a nuragic complex discovered in the 90s, during the restoration of the Casa Zapata (former residence of the Sardinian-Aragonese barons, built in 1500 on the ancient nuraghe).
The tour to the Su Nuraxi in Barumini was the highlight of my trip to Sardinia. It was a great opportunity to see a bit more of the Sardinian countryside you won’t experience if you are only travelling near the coast. Alessandro was a real treasure and a very patient guide! He knows his country well and it was such a pleasure to get to know a real Sardian who also loves Mangas and Japanese culture 🙂
For everyone who is interested in an anthropological and archeological hidden jewel – Su Nuraxi is the place to go. I can well imagine why the Nuraghe choose this spot, because the view in every direction is interesting and lovely at the same time. I have never been to the pyramids, but rolling through the domelike towers was giving me quite a thrilling and satisfying experience.
What is hidden at the boarders of Europe should definitely be better known and taught at school.
Enjoy your trip if u go there!
We had an amazing time with Alessandro, the tour of Barumini was interesting and informative. It was great to have a guide who knows the history of Sardinia very well and who can help you to understand more about the archaeological sites.
This cultural part of the trip was balanced well with the time we spent exploring the Giara di Gesturi, we were lucky to see so many of the native horses as we walked, it was a beautiful sight and very peaceful location.
If you think about Sardinia the first thing in your mind are all the amazing beaches but thats not true Sardinia has also amazing archaeological historical places as SU NURAXI UNESCO patrimony. If you get a local guide as Alessandro I can tell you, you are very lucky. He is very nice, with a good background in the area, really knows what he is talking about and more than happy to answer all the questions. I liked the tour so much that I bought another three different without regrets. We were a group and we had pick up point, he was always on time, and always given us tips about where to eat, by stuffs, best beaches…Highly recommended. Thanks again Alessandro :)). Rose
We spent a half day with Alessandro, our private guide, on a trip to the pre historic site of Su Nuraxi dating to 17th century BC! It was the perfect morning out. Collecting us direct from our city centre apartment, our private guide drove us to the site explaining a lot about the history of Sardinia, the food, the wine and all things in between. At the site itself we were impressed with both the state of ruins and also the depth of knowledge that Alessandro had. He brought to life the nuraghic culture and peoples so much so that we were inspired to visit the archaeological museum in Cagliari that same afternoon. All in all a perfect morning out, good value and a truly inspiring guide. If you’re in Sardinia then we’d recommend taking time out to visit this special place.
Very interesting tour to a place that it is a very well maintained fortress and houses of one of the first civilization living in the Mediterranean. We did the tour with Alessandro Picciau, a great local guide who took us to and through the place explaining everything we need to know about Sardinian history and culture. Alessandro was always willing to share his vast knowledge with a smile and a very nice attitude. We enjoyed a lot the tour.
